A mason has been beaten to death in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon Upazila over a financial dispute.
The incident took place in Parameshwardi village of Noagaon Union on Sunday night, said Sonargaon Police Station chief (OC) Md Mahibbullah.
The victim, 22-year-old Md Nayeem Hossain, hailed from the village.
Nayeem’s elder brother Nasimul said the body was recovered around 9pm from a field beside a canal, about 200 yards from their home.
He filed a murder case with Sonargaon Police Station on Monday morning.
Confirming the arrest of one suspect, OC Mahibbullah said: “The killing occurred over a financial transaction.”
Nayeem was the youngest of 11 siblings. Both his parents died when he was very young, and he was raised by his brothers and sisters. His brother Nasimul is a contractor for masons, and Nayeem worked with him.
The two brothers were at a tea stall together on Sunday night when Nayeem left after receiving a phone call.
“My brother was telling someone on the phone, ‘I don’t have any money.’ He said it two or three times. He was standing a short way away from me while speaking. I didn’t ask him about it. After a while, I noticed he wasn’t around any more. I went home around 8:30pm,” Nasimul said.
He said he later tried calling his brother but found the phone switched off. Then, within 30 minutes, he heard a commotion outside and came out to find people shouting “robbers, robbers”. He then went to a nearby field with locals and found Nayeem lying there, covered in blood.
“His face was unrecognisable. Locals couldn’t identify him. I recognised him from his clothes. We took him to the hospital, but doctors said he had died before arrival,” he said.
Police recovered the body from the Upazila health complex. OC Mahibbullah said multiple injury marks were found on the body.
Citing the findings of the primary investigation, the police officer said: “Although he worked as a mason, he used to lend money with interest. The murder took place over a dispute with the attackers related to the matter.”
Police are working to arrest the other suspects involved, he said.
