The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has expelled its central leader Sathi Uday Kusum Barua after he sided with the locals in a comment over clashes between students and locals near Chittagong University.
The expulsion was announced on Sunday in a statement signed by the party’s Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The order said Uday, a member of the BNP’s Executive Committee, was expelled from all party positions, with his primary membership suspended for creating disorder and defying party directives.
Uday had been involved with the BNP since its founding.
The clashes broke out around midnight on Saturday when an argument between a female student and a security guard at a building near the university’s Gate No. 2 escalated, leading to violence between students and locals.
The unrest continued into Sunday.
Over the two days of clashes, more than a hundred students, including the university’s pro-vice chancellor and proctor, were injured.
