A young man has surrendered to police with “a blood-stained Chinese axe” after killing his friend in Mymensingh’s Trishal.

The incident took place at Trishal Government Nazrul Academy grounds at 8.30pm on Thursday.

The dead, Muntasir Fahim, 22, had been studying in Malaysia and returned home four months ago, his grandmother Maksuda Akter said.

He was living in a house behind the municipal hospital. His return flight to Malaysia was scheduled for Dec 25.

The man who surrendered, Ahidul Islam Anik, is Fahim’s friend.

Trishal Police chief Golam Mustafa Rubel said Anik came to the station with a blood-stained sharp weapon after killing Fahim.

He admitted to the crime during preliminary questioning, the officer added.

Officer Rubel noted that the attack appeared to stem from a “personal dispute”, though the exact reason is yet to be determined. The case is under investigation.

Police, citing witnesses, said Anik attacked Fahim near a water tank south of the vocational wing of the academy with the axe, killing him on the spot.

Later, around 9pm, Anik arrived at Trishal Police Station with the axe in hand, informed the duty officer about the killing, and was taken into custody.

Following the suspect’s guidance, police recovered Fahim’s mutilated body from the scene.

Maksuda alleged that Fahim had always stayed home, but Anik lured him out and killed him according to a premeditated plan.
