A 21-year-old woman has succumbed to her injuries hours after she suffered a fall from a rickshaw when muggers tried to snatch her bag in Dhaka’s Uttara.
Mukta Akter, a resident of Dakshinkhan, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 2pm on Thursday.
According to her family, Mukta was shifted to three different hospitals before she finally arrived at DMCH, where doctors pronounced her dead.
The incident occurred around 9:30am near the Uttara South Metro Rail Station. Mukta was reportedly travelling in a battery-run rickshaw to a market in Pallabi for Eid shopping.
"A private car pulled up alongside the rickshaw, and someone reached out to grab her vanity bag," said DMCH Police Outpost chief Md Faruk.
Mukta’s husband, Limon Hossain, a garment worker, stated that a fellow passenger and bystanders initially rushed her to Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital.
"The treatment there was delayed, so we moved her to Ahsanullah Hospital in Tongi. From there, she was referred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and finally to DMCH," Limon said.
Mukta, originally from Sonapara village in Barguna Sadar Upazila, had been living in a rented house in Dakshinkhan with her husband since their marriage two years ago.
Turag police chief Md Rafiqul Islam said a team was dispatched to the scene following a notification from DMCH, adding that they are currently working to identify the vehicle involved.
