Chattogram’s gas crisis has sharply worsened after supplies were cut further from Saturday night, with more gas being diverted to Dhaka amid a technical problem at a floating LNG terminal in Moheshkhali.
On Sunday, factories struggled to maintain production, power cuts increased, CNG stations faced long queues and many households could not light their stoves.
Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd (KGDCL) officials say the region normally needs 350 million cubic feet (mmcf) a day. Supply from the national grid fell from 230mmcf after the Jul 21 terminal fault to 217mmcf on Saturday and around 200mmcf on Sunday.
A senior KGDCL marketing official told bdnews24.com, “The crisis will continue until the FSRU problem is resolved. There is no problem with our supply lines. We are receiving less gas, so we are able to supply less. [On Sunday] we received even less gas than in the previous few days.”
Another official said supplies to power plants had been cut from 38mmcf to 30mmcf and fertiliser factories from 48mmcf to 42mmcf.
“The crisis is worsening because supply in Chattogram is being reduced and sent to Dhaka. So supplies have fallen since [Saturday]. This crisis is likely to last for several more days.”
Public Misery Mounts
CNG stations across the city saw long queues on Sunday, with some unable to sell gas until afternoon.
CNG driver Saiful Alam said, “I have been standing here since morning. Even the station staff cannot say when they will provide gas. If I spend the whole day here, when will I earn fares? How will I meet the daily payment?”
Chittagong Chamber President Mohammad Amirul Haque said, “The current situation is unbearable. We did not expect this. At the current low pressure, it will not be possible to keep industries running.”
Power generation also fell, forcing around 300MW of loadshedding on Sunday afternoon.
