The Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA) and PROGGA: Knowledge for Progress have sought the support of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to expedite the amendment of the tobacco control law.
The call was made during a meeting with Md Abdur Rahman Khan, chairman of the NBR, at the NBR headquarters on Sunday.
The delegates from ATMA and PROGGA emphasised that tobacco use claims at least 442 lives daily in Bangladesh, urging the NBR to act swiftly to amend the existing law to reduce this devastating toll.
The economic burden caused by tobacco-related diseases significantly outweighs the revenue generated from tobacco, prompting the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to initiate the amendment process.
ATMA and PROGGA representatives stressed the urgency of strengthening the tobacco control law to mitigate more harm.
During the meeting, NBR Chairman Abdur assured the delegates, saying: “We will continue to provide all kinds of support in amending the law.”
The meeting was attended by key figures, including Mortuza Haider Liton, convenor of ATMA; Nadira Kiron and Mizan Chowdhury, co-convenors of ATMA; and Mehedi Hasan from PROGGA.
