Fire at Ghorashal Power Station leaves two Upazilas without power for 6 hours

A unit of the Palash Fire Service tames the blaze after an hour-long effort

A fire broke out at a substation of the Ghorashal Thermal Power Station in Narsingdi, damaging a transformer and leaving two Upazilas without power for nearly six hours.

The incident occurred around 4am on Thursday, according to Enamul Haque, the chief engineer of the station.

He said the fire erupted on the 132/33kV transformer connected to the national grid, causing panic across the power station.

A unit of the Palash Fire Service reached the site and took about an hour to bring the flames under control.

The blaze destroyed the transformer, resulting in a power outage for residents of Palash and Kaliganj subdistricts. Power was restored to these areas after six hours through alternative means.

Enamul added that the fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. The extent of damage has yet to be assessed.
