A BNP activist has been injured in a shooting in Noakhali’s Chowmuhani, in what police believe was an attack targeting a district BNP leader.

The incident occurred in front of Obaidul's tea stall on the main lane of Hawkers Market around midnight on Thursday, said Begumganj Model Police chief Mohammad Shamsuzzaman.

The injured man, Yasin Sentu, 45, is an associate of Abul Kashem, 60, former religious affairs secretary of the Noakhali district BNP.

Kashem also serves as president of the Noakhali National Hawkers Cooperative Society Limited.

Citing local residents, police said Kashem had been at the Hawkers Market office in Chowmuhani, the district's main commercial hub, on Thursday night.

He left the office with Sentu around 11:45pm.

As they reached Obaidul's tea stall on the market's main lane, assailants opened fire. Sentu tried to push Kashem out of the way, causing the bullet to graze Kashem's hand before striking the left side of Sentu's chest.

Locals rushed Sentu to the 250 Bed Noakhali General Hospital, where he received primary treatment before being referred to Dhaka for advanced medical care.

Officer Shamsuzzaman said police initially believed the gunfire was aimed at BNP leader Kashem, but the bullet missed its intended target and hit his associate instead.

He added that preparations are under way to file a case, while police are working to identify and arrest those involved.
