Police medals will not be awarded on the opening day of this year’s Police Week.
A total of 107 members of the force, across different ranks, had been expected to receive medals during the annual event.
The news of the postponement came on Saturday night, a day before Police Week was due to formally open, according to senior police officials and several officers whose names were on the list.
A senior official at the home ministry also confirmed that the medals would not be awarded on Sunday.
An announcement on the matter will be made on Sunday, the official said.
An additional IGP whose name appeared on the preliminary list of recipients also confirmed the development on Saturday night.
Several other officers named on the medal list said they were informed that the medals would be given later.
Police policymakers usually wait for Police Week to present their demands directly to the head of government and to receive medals for commendable work done in the previous year.
The 107 officers also participated in the exercise during the daytime on Saturday. Later at night, they learned about the development.
They, however, were not informed of the reason for the decision.
Preparations are under way at Rajarbagh Police Lines for the colourful inauguration of the first Police Week under the newly elected BNP government.
Although the awarding has been postponed, the inauguration ceremony for the Week will take place.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who was also scheduled to present the medals, is expected to attend the opening ceremony.
The Police Week, usually held every winter, was deferred to summer due to the general election.
Some officers expressed disappointment over the postponement of the medal-giving ceremony.
Every year, on the first day of Police Week, the prime minister presents medals to the respective police officers and members.
The Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) and the President's Police Medal (PPM) are awarded for meritorious work.
The police officers and members on the medal list participated in the Police Week exercise at Rajarbagh from May 2.
An officer of the rank of Additional IG told bdnews24.com on Saturday night, "I contacted the Police Headquarters after learning the news. They informed me that the medal presentation ceremony has been postponed."
