Police have arrested the father and grandmother of a 2-year-old boy in connection with his death during a domestic dispute in Chattogram’s Bakalia.
The arrests were made on Thursday from their home in Bow Bazar following a case filed by the child’s mother Sharmin Akter.
The detainees are Md Sajib and his mother Nur Nahar Begum.
According to Bakalia Police chief Mohammad Solaiman, the incident occurred on Tuesday night during a violent altercation between Sajib and his wife.
As Sajib was allegedly assaulting Sharmin, their son, only known as Ashraf, tried to climb onto his mother’s lap.
At one stage of the altercation, Sajib pushed the child, causing him to hit a bed and suffer a head injury, after which he developed convulsions.
He was later taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The OC said the child's mother was also seriously injured in the assault.
Taking advantage of her condition, other family members allegedly concealed the true cause of death and hurriedly buried the boy on Tuesday night.
Police moved to arrest the duo after Sharmin lodged a formal complaint on Thursday.
