A 28-year-old man has been hacked to death by a group of attackers in Khulna's Sonadanga.

The incident occurred around 8:30pm on Wednesday behind Talukdar Community Centre, according to Sonadanga Model Police chief Mohammad Rafiqul Islam.

The victim, Md Mostakin, was a resident of the Alkatra Mill area under Khulna Sadar Police Station.

He worked as a technician at an electrical shop in the city.

Rafiqul said Mostakin was standing near the community centre and using his phone when eight people arrived on four motorcycles and attacked him with sharp weapons.

He suffered multiple injuries, the police officer said.

Local residents took Mostakin to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The motive for the attack and the identities of those involved were not immediately known, Rafiqul said.

Police have begun an investigation to establish the motive and identify those responsible.

The killing comes amid concern over a recent series of murders in Khulna.

According to data from the Crime Investigation Department of Khulna Metropolitan Police, 24 murders have taken place in the city so far this year.

MM Shakiluzzaman, additional police commissioner for crime and operations at KMP, said most of the killings were linked to control of the drug trade and attempts to establish dominance.

“Most of those involved in the murders have been arrested,” he said.

Shakiluzzaman said police had also recovered eight firearms a few days ago, adding that law-enforcing agencies were making every effort to maintain law and order in the city.
