As preparations are under way for the swearing in of a new government, Nasimul Ghani – the senior secretary of home affairs - has been appointed as the new cabinet secretary.
According to tradition, the cabinet secretary conducts the swearing-in ceremony for the new cabinet. The new BNP government is to be sworn in on the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building on Tuesday afternoon.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notice appointing Ghani as cabinet secretary on Monday, stating that the order will immediately take effect.
The crucial administrative post has been changed again in the span of a day.
The interim government cancelled the contractual appointment of cabinet secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid on Saturday, two days after the election.
In a statement on that day, the Cabinet Division said the remaining term of Rashid’s contractual appointment as cabinet secretary had been cancelled “in the public interest”, with immediate effect.
Another notice had given M Siraz Uddin Mia, the chief secretary to the chief advisor, the additional duties of cabinet secretary. Now, those duties have been transferred to Ghani.
Ghani was brought back from retirement during the changeover in government following the 2024 July Uprising and was given a contractual appointment for two years as senior secretary.
He was initially posted to the Public Affairs Division of the President’s Office, but was later appointed as senior secretary of home affairs on Dec 22, 2024.
Ghani, who retired as an additional secretary, was once the personal secretary to BNP leader Jamiruddin Sircar. He was sent into compulsory retirement after the Awami League came to power.
