A family of five who perished one by one after a gas explosion at their flat in Narayanganj's Fatullah have been laid to rest side by side in Patuakhali's Bauphal.

The Namaz-e-Janaza or funeral prayers for four of the victims were held at North Kanakdia Government Primary School field in Kanakdia Union at 10am on Saturday, drawing hundreds of mourners.

Mir Kamal was buried first, and his wife and three children were laid to rest beside him.

Patuakhali-2 MP Shafiqul Islam Masud attended the service, as a heavy shroud of grief descended over the village with relatives and neighbours breaking down in tears.

The tragedy began on Sunday when a gas leak triggered a blast at a residence in Giridhara.

All five members of the family sustained critical burns and were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

Kamal, 45, was the first to succumb to his injuries on Monday.

His youngest daughter, Kotha, 4, died on Wednesday.

The loss continued into Thursday, with Kamal’s only son, Munna, 7, passing away in the morning and his eldest daughter, Munni, 10, dying in the afternoon.

Finally, his wife Saima Begum, 35, passed away on Friday morning while undergoing treatment.

Local residents described Kamal as a hardworking and humble man who had recently fulfilled a long-held dream of building a house in his village.

He did build it. But he never got to live in it with his wife and children.

His cousin Mir Rafiq said the village had come together to shoulder the arrangements, as the loss left everyone shaken to the core.

“It was supposed to be a happy return during Eid, but no one imagined they would come back like this, in coffins,” he added.

Local Union Parishad Chairman Shajahan Hawlader said the community has been devastated.

Relatives, neighbours, and people from across the area have been pouring into the family home since the news broke.

MP Shafiqul said he had monitored their treatment in Dhaka and arranged for the bodies to be transported to Patuakhali.

“The loss of five members of the same family has left us all heartbroken," he added.
