Awami League leader Yusuf Hossain Humayun passes away

He serves as a member of the Awami League advisory council until his death

Awami League leader and freedom fighter Yusuf Hossain Humayun has died.

He was 90.

Yusuf breathed his last around 6pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka, his son Aftab Yusuf Raj said.

The funeral and burial of the former presidium member of the Awami League - whose activities have been banned - will be announced later, Raj added.

Former MP Yusuf, also a senior Supreme Court lawyer, was a member of the Awami League advisory council until his death.

The former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Yusuf also served as the vice chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council and was elected president of the Barishal District Bar Association several times.

Yusuf was one of the lawyers for former prime minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, who was arrested during the military-controlled caretaker government after the 1/11 changeover.

The Awami League leader is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons, his political and professional colleague SM Rezaul Karim said in a Facebook post.

Yusuf was born on Nov14, 1936 in Bhola Sadar Upazila. He was elected as a lawmaker from the then Bakerganj-4 constituency as an Awami League candidate in the first national election in 1973.
