Rony’s friend Kamal Mahmud testified before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haque on Wednesday, a source told bdnews24.com.

Auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali and rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim were killed when shots were randomly fired from a vehicle early on Apr 14.

Rony is accused of firing the fatal shots from a black Land Cruiser Prado while ‘under the influence of drugs’. His mother, reserved seat MP Pinu Khan, is also general secretary of Mahila Awami League, the ruling party’s female wing.

Mahmud was in the vehicle with him when he fired his weapon, as he was irritated after being stuck in slight traffic.

He had also testified before the investigating officer of the double murder case.

Mahmud told the magistrate the same thing he told the police, said the court’s General Recording Officer SI Mahmudur Rahman.

“(Mahmud) recalled the entire event to the magistrate at his chamber under Section 164 (that provides for confessional statement),” he told bdnews24.com.

“He confirmed that Rony started shooting because he was irritated by the traffic,” an investigating officer told bdnews24.com on condition of anonymity.

“He (Mahmud) said, Rony wasn’t aiming at anyone. He didn’t hear anyone scream after he fired the shots. He later heard that two have been shot.”

The case’s investigating officer brought the witness to court. He went home after testifying.

MP Pinu Khan has been facing criticism over her son’s action.

She has denied using her influence to save her son, saying she also wants justice served.

Media has reported that vehicle involved in the shooting is registered to Pinu Khan.

Police impounded the SUV on Monday, but Rony’s elder brother Tanjir Ahmed has moved the court to have the vehicle in his custody.
