A child has died after a private car caught fire while refuelling at a station in Narayanganj’s Rupganj Upazila.

The incident took place on Friday at the Rangdhanu CNG filling station along the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the Upazila's Karnagop area, said Mizanur Rahman, chief of Rupganj's Bhulta Police Outpost.

The deceased, four-year-old Jihan, was a resident of Ruposhi area of Rupganj.

He was going to his aunt's house in Narsingdi with his mother and uncle in a private car.

Relatives said police reported the family stopped at the station in the afternoon to refuel their private car. While the mother and uncle were outside, Jihan remained inside.

The car suddenly caught fire, engulfing it completely. Jihan was burnt to death.

Filling station employees fled as the car caught fire, while the victim's relatives vandalised the station.

Mizanur said the body of the deceased has been recovered and sent to the Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Legal action is underway in this incident.
