Telangana has proposed renaming a key road in Hyderabad after US President Donald Trump, a move positioned as part of the state’s push for global visibility ahead of an investment summit.
The road running beside the US Consulate General is set to be designated “Donald Trump Avenue”, which officials believe would mark the first time a sitting US president is honoured with such a naming outside the United States, as per the NDTV.
The Indian news outlet said the initiative forms part of a wider naming drive designed to spotlight Hyderabad’s emergence as a technology hub.
It added that Telangana is also considering names linked to major global corporations, including “Google Street”, “Microsoft Road” and “Wipro Junction”, while a 100-metre Greenfield Radial Road connecting the Nehru Outer Ring Road to the proposed Future City has already been approved to bear the name of Padma Bhushan Ratan Tata.
The Raviryala interchange has been designated the “Tata Interchange”.
The broadcaster said Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy described the naming strategy as both a tribute to globally influential figures and a source of inspiration for daily commuters, adding that it would help elevate Hyderabad’s international profile.
Union Minister and BJP leader Bandi Sanjay Kumar, however, criticised the move and insisted Hyderabad should be renamed “back to Bhagyanagar”.
“If the Congress government is so eager to change names, they might as well start with something that actually has history and meaning,” he posted on X.
He claimed Reddy was renaming locations after “whoever trends”.
“The only party actually stepping out, questioning the government, and taking up real people's issues through MahaDharna is the BJP,” he added.
