Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has emphasised that his team are concentrating on Real Madrid rather than the possible return of Kylian Mbappé for Sunday’s Spanish Supercopa final in Saudi Arabia, ESPN reports.
Mbappé, 27, missed Real’s semifinal victory over Atlético Madrid with a knee injury but has since flown to Jeddah and could feature in the showpiece clash.
The French striker has scored 29 goals this season in all competitions, including six in five Clásicos. Flick, however, highlighted that those encounters have largely ended in Barcelona victories.
“How many Clásicos have we played in the last one-and-a-half years?” Flick asked at a press conference, according to ESPN.
“We lost one, okay? So it’s about that. I know he’s a fantastic player… but for us to compete against one of the best teams in the world, we will adapt like we always do. It’s not about Mbappé, it’s about Madrid and how we want to play.”
Pressed on Mbappé’s current form, Flick added: “At the moment, Mbappé is the best striker, it’s like that. He has scored many, many goals and is a world-class player.”
Barcelona suffered a 2-1 defeat to Real in LaLiga earlier this season, with Mbappé scoring. That result had put Real five points clear at the top, but since then, Barca surged nine points ahead, currently enjoying a nine-game winning streak.
“It was only one game,” Flick said of the October defeat. “Since then, we came back. We focus on what is necessary, we play much better and more successfully. The team is very focused. I am happy about this situation. Tomorrow we have to show how good we are.”
Sunday marks the fourth consecutive Supercopa final between the clubs. Barcelona have not conceded in their last five, with Lamine Yamal ready to start and only Gavi and Andreas Christensen confirmed absent.
