The National Sports Council, or NSC, has issued a directive renaming Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka’s Paltan as the National Stadium, Dhaka.
A circular signed by NSC Secretary Md Aminul Islam on Saturday said: "In light of the above subject, all relevant parties are hereby informed that the names of the following sports facilities constructed by the National Sports Council have been determined as follows by order."
The change was made official through the directive, which also sent copies to the NSC project director, the stadium administrator, the Bangladesh Football Federation, and the Bangladesh Olympic Association.
Built in 1954, the stadium was previously known as Dhaka Stadium and later as Dhaka National Stadium.
In 1996, a proposal was made to rename it after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and final approval was granted in 1998.
