The government’s attempts to 'thwart' the BNP’s movement after Eid-ul-Fitr with ‘police and guns’ will only draw a tough retaliation, warns Khaleda Zia.

“The people are united to overthrow this government. Our movement after the Eid will be peaceful and democratic,” she said while addressing an Iftar gathering hosted by the party’s Dhaka metropolitan unit on Wednesday.
“We have heard that the Awami League will take to the streets after the Eid. Its okay that they want to do that, but I would like to make it clear that you (AL) can’t use the police and armed goons.”
“If that happens, there will be retaliation,” she warned the ruling party.
She alleged that leaders and activists of the BNP and its allies were being repressed and tortured.
“There won’t be any change in this country as long as this illegal Awami League government is in power. That’s why this government must be thrown out.”
“They (government) don’t want talks. They want to stay in power until Qiyamat (end of the world),” she said.
The BNP chief admitted that there were flaws in tactics of the party’s movement in capital Dhaka ahead of the Jan 5 general election.
The party had observed continuous programmes to thwart that ballot. But after the Awami League came to power for a consecutive second term, the BNP leaders had questioned the effectiveness of the Dhaka metropolitan unit.
Regarding the issue, Khaleda said, “It cannot be denied that there were flaws in the movement in Dhaka.”
“That’s why a new convenor committee for Dhaka metropolitan will be announced very soon,” she said.
