Former water resources minister and senior Awami League leader Ramesh Chandra Sen has died while in jail.
The 85-year-old passed away at 9:30am on Saturday, said Taufiq Hasan, a doctor at the emergency department of Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.
Sen, a former member of the Awami League presidium, had been detained at Dinajpur District Jail after his arrest in cases filed following the events of Aug 5, 2024.
Hospital officials said he fell ill inside the jail premises in the morning and was taken to the hospital at 9:10am. Doctors declared him dead at 9:29am.
Thakurgaon district Awami League Joint General Secretary Mostaq Alam Tulu told bdnews24.com that Sen had been suffering from age-related ailments for a long time.
He added that the veteran leader was already unwell when he was taken into custody, and his health deteriorated in jail before he was moved to the hospital.
Jail Superintendent Farhad Sarker said the body would be handed over to the family after completion of formalities.
Sen first entered parliament after winning the Thakurgaon-1 seat in a 1997 by-election.
He later won the same constituency in the 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024 general elections.
According to police records, Sen was arrested from his residence in Ramnath of Thakurgaon Sadar on Aug 16, 2024.
Shown arrested in three cases, including one involving murder, he was sent to Thakurgaon District Jail by court order and moved to Dinajpur jail the following day.
