Dhaka, Sep 30 (bdnews24.com – The ruling party will not be able to come to power again through their 'conspiracy' of manipulating the next national parliament elections, the BNP secretary general has said .
Khandker Delwar Hossain made the comment in reference to the appointment of the new chief justice, who he said had been appointed superseding two senior judges, and not based on his merit, compared to the other candidates.
Delwar was speaking at a discussion on Thursday to mark the 31st founding anniversary of Jatyatabadi Ulama Dal at the National Press Club.
He went on to allege that making A B M Khairul Haque chief justice by superseding two other senior judges is a government ploy to manipulate the next general elections.
"It appears obvious that they did it on purpose to make their favoured candidate the next head of caretaker government," he added.
The provision for a caretaker government is a unique part of the Bangladeshi constitution that allows it to hold the national elections at the end of each government's tenure without being beholden to any party.
He referred to the AL movement in 2006 protesting the appointment of the then last retired chief justice K M Hasan as the chief advisor to the caretaker government, saying, "You did not let justice Hasan take office as the then caretaker government chief. In the same way, the people will go against this conspiracy."
Justice Khairul Haque formally took oath as the 19th chief justice on Thursday. President Zillur Rahman administered the oath of office of the new chief justice at Bangabhaban at 10:45am.
Justice Haque, who replaces justice Mohammad Fazlul Karim, was appointed chief justice on September 26 superseding two senior judges - Abdul Matin and Shah Abu Naimul Rahman.
The BNP secretary general urged the people to be united and participate in the movement, led by opposition chief Khaleda Zia, against the repressive government.
Chaired by Ulama Dal president Moulana Abdul Malek, BNP standing committee member M K Anwar, advisory council member M A Mannan, finance affairs secretary Abdus Salam, religious secretary Masud Ahmed Talukder, Juba Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain, among others, spoke at the meeting.
