Four parliamentary candidates, representing Jamaat-e-Islami and the BNP, have moved the High Court seeking to annul the results of the Feb 12 general election in their respective constituencies.
The single-bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain accepted the applications on Thursday and fixed the dates for the hearings.
The petitioners are Sunsila Jabrin Priyanka, who contested on a BNP ticket from the Sherpur-1 constituency, and Jamaat candidates Muhammad Abdul Mannan from Dhaka-6, Md Enayat Ullah from Dhaka-7, and Abdur Rahim Sarker from Gaibandha-4.
Under electoral law, candidates may challenge official results in the High Court.
Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury had designated Justice Zakir’s bench on Feb 17 specifically to dispose of such election-related disputes.
ASM Shahriar Kabir, counsel for the three Jamaat candidates, told bdnews24.com that the court has scheduled May 3 for their hearings.
Meanwhile, Advocate Rahemîn Choudhury, representing the BNP’s Sunsila, said their petition seeks to scrap the Sherpur-1 results and calls for a fresh vote.
“The hearing for our application has been fixed for April 20,” the lawyer added.
The parliamentary polls were held on Feb 12. The election results have been gazetted.
These petitions represent the first high-profile legal challenges to the poll outcomes.
The Dhaka-7 seat was won by the BNP’s Hamidur Rahman, while the BNP’s Ishraque Hossain took Dhaka-6.
BNP’s Mohammad Shamim Kaiser won Gaibandha-4 and Jamaat’s Rashedul Islam bagged Sherpur-1.
