Kazi Sazzad Zahir Chandan has been elected president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) for a four-year term, while Abdullah Al Kafee Ratan has been chosen as general secretary.
Both had been serving as presidium members of the party. The new leadership was elected on Wednesday at CPB’s 13th congress.
They succeed outgoing president Shah Alam and general secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince, who were elected at the previous congress in 2022.
The outgoing general secretary said, “The new president, general secretary and other committee posts have been filled. I am now serving as a member.”
The CPB’s 13th congress, which began on Friday at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka, was held under the slogan: “Establish a leftist democratic government against exploitation and inequality to bring social change.”
Newly elected president Sazzad earlier served as president of the Bangladesh Students' Union between 1994 and 1996.
New general secretary Ratan previously worked as social welfare secretary of the Dhaka metropolitan unit of Bangladesh Students’ Union, later becoming president of its Dhaka University committee.
