A Dhaka court will deliver its verdict in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission over corruption in the allocation of land plots in Purbachal against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her nieces Tulip Siddiq -- a British MP -- and Azmina Siddiq Ruponti on Feb 2.

A total of 18 suspects stand accused in the case.

Judge Rabiul Alam of the Dhaka Special Judges Court-4 set the date for the verdict on Tuesday after the prosecution and defence completed their arguments.

Advocate Zahirul Islam represented the ACC at the hearing. He requested the maximum sentence for the suspects - life imprisonment.

No lawyer represented the 17 absconding suspects, including Hasina, Tulip and Ruponti. They are not allowed to defend themselves.

Lawyer Shahinur Islam represented Khurshid Alam, the only suspect in jail custody. He sought Khurshid's acquittal, claiming that the ACC had "failed to prove" the allegations.

The other accused in the case are former administrative officer of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Md Saiful Islam Sarkar, Senior Assistant Secretary Purabi Goldar, Additional Secretary (Administration) Kazi Wasi Uddin, former Chairman of RAJUK Md Anisur Rahman Mia, Member (Development Control) Tanmoy Das, former member (planning) Mohammad Nasir Uddin, former member Major (Engineer) Shamsuddin Ahmed Chowdhury (retd.), Member (Estate and Land) Md Nurul Islam, former state minister Sharif Ahmed, former private secretary to the prime minister Mohammad Salah Uddin, Md Waliullah, Mazharul Islam, Kamrul Islam, and Nayeb Ali Sharif.

After the changeover of power on Aug 5, 2024, allegations of irregularities and corruption during the Awami League era began to come to the fore.

The ACC filed six cases in January last year over allegations of allocating a 60-katha plot in the Purbachal New Town project by the capital development authority through “abuse of power and irregularities.

In addition to Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, nieces Tulip and Ruponti, and nephew Radwan Mujib Siddique Bobby are among the suspects in the cases.

Of these, verdicts have been delivered in three cases involving Hasina’s family. The court has also delivered a verdict in one case involving Rehana and Tulip.

The court has sentenced Hasina to a total of 26 years in prison in four cases over graft. Joy and Putul have been sentenced to five years each. In addition, Rehana has been sentenced to seven years in jail and her daughter Tulip has been sentenced to two years.

Testimony in the case over Ruponti's plot ended on Jan 5. A total of 30 people testified in the case. On Jan 8, Khurshid Alam pleaded not guilty.

Meanwhile, the recording of testimony in the case against Rehana's son Bobby concluded in the same court on Tuesday.

Khurshid also pleaded not guilty in that case.
