Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has paid tribute to former president Ziaur Rahman by laying a wreath at his grave on the anniversary of his death.
Tarique first laid a wreath on the grave of his father at 11am on Saturday in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on behalf of the family.
Later he, also chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), laid another wreath at the grave on behalf of the party, accompanied by party leaders Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed and Prof AZM Zahid Hossain Also present at the time were party leaders Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Mir Abdus Salam, Masum Ahmed Talukder, Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Habibur Rashid Habib, Aminur Haque, SM Jahangir, Rafiqul Alam Majnu, Shirin Sultana, Sultana Ahmed, Helen Jerin Khan, Arifa Sultana Ruma, Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, Rafiqul Islam, Shafiqul Alam Milton, Rafiqul Islam Bachchu and other party leaders were also present for the occasion.
The party chairman and the National Standing Committee members observed a moment of silence as tribute to the party founder.
Later, Tarique joined a prayer service at the grave yard at the initiative of the Jatiotabadi Ulema Dal.
On Saturday, the BNP, its allies and affiliates are observing the 45th anniversary of Ziaur Rahman’s killing through various programmes.
On May 30, 1981, then president Ziaur Rahman was shot dead by a group of soldiers at the Chittagong Circle House. BNP observes the occasion as “Martyrdom Day”.
The BNP flag has been flying at half-mast at the party’s central offices in Naya Paltan, the chairman's office in Gulshan and party offices across the country since the morning. The national flag and a black flag of mourning have also been hoisted.
Following the premier, different associate and professional organisations including the Dhaka North City and Dhaka South City units of the BNP, the Jubo Dal, the Swechchhasebak Dal, the Muktijoddha Dal, the Sramik Dal, the Krishak Dal, the Mohila Dal, DAB, AAB, Ulema Dal, Chhatra Dal and others presented flowers at the grave.
The BNP has launched an eight-day programme since May 25 to commemorate the occasion. On Sunday, a discussion has been scheduled at the Engineers Institution auditorium in Dhaka at 2:30pm.
After paying his respects, BNP Chairman Tarique will open a programme to distribute clothes and dry food among the needy from in front of T&T on Manik Mia Avenue.
The party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that the chairman will launch the distribution of clothes and dry food at a total of 17 location in the capital's north and south city corporations.
