Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the opposition is trying to use the July Uprising as a tool to return to power.
Speaking at an event at the National Press Club on Friday, he said the BNP does not want July to become just another political instrument for capturing power.
"What we have repeatedly said is that the July Uprising was not confined to the events of that single month. Rather, it was the culmination of our long struggle -- nearly 18 to 19 years -- against ‘fascism’.”
He added, "Many have levelled different accusations against the BNP. Six million of its supporters have faced false cases, around 1,700 leaders and activists have been subjected to enforced disappearance, and thousands have been killed in the fight against the ‘fascist’ regime."
"That is why we must keep repeating these facts, because some people are trying to create confusion over the issue."
