BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has paid tribute at the grave of Osman Hadi, the slain convenor of the cultural and political platform Inqilab Moncho.
The BNP leader visited Hadi’s grave around 11:30am on Saturday at the mausoleum complex near the Dhaka University Central Mosque. After laying a wreath and offering prayers, Tarique paid his respects at the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Around 11:41am, Tarique left for the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon to enrol on the voter list.
Tarique's motorcade left his Gulshan residence around 10:40am. Unlike the previous two days, when he travelled in a bulletproof bus, he arrived on campus in a white SUV.
Ahead of his visit, Inqilab Moncho activists moved away from Shahbagh and gathered in front of Aziz Super Market, where they are holding a sit-in demanding justice for Hadi’s killing.
Thousands of student activists gathered on the Dhaka University campus to welcome Tarique. Security personnel were seen struggling to clear a path through the crowd as his motorcade made its way to the gravesite. Tarique waved to student leaders and supporters from his vehicle.
Tarique returned to Bangladesh on Thursday after spending over 17 years in exile in the United Kingdom. On the day of his return, he attended a reception, addressed a large gathering of supporters and later visited Evercare Hospital to see his mother, BNP chief and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
On Friday, he visited the grave of his father, BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, before travelling to Savar to pay tribute to the fallen heroes of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Memorial.
Hadi, an independent election hopeful in the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot by an assailant on Dec 12 while campaigning in Dhaka's Bijoynagar area. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Evercare Hospital before being flown to Singapore by air ambulance. He died there on Dec 18.
Following a state-managed funeral prayer at Parliament's South Plaza on Dec 20, Hadi was buried at the Dhaka University Central Mosque complex, beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Speaking at a reception in Purbachal after returning to Bangladesh, Tarique referred to Hadi, saying: “Osman Hadi wanted democracy to be established for the people of this country. He wanted the democratic rights of the people to be restored, and for them to regain their democratic and economic rights.
“If we are to repay the debt of blood -- of Osman Hadi and those martyred in the 2024 movement, of those who were martyred in 1971, and of those who were disappeared or killed during past autocratic rule, then let us come together to build the Bangladesh we aspire to, where we all work together to create that Bangladesh.”
