Speaking to the media at the Awami League’s office in Dhanmondi on Sunday amid the recent calls for Khaleda’s release on parole for better treatment, Hanif said that her condition does not warrant a release on parole.

“The conditions for releasing Khaleda Zia on parole are yet to arise. Generally, the issue of parole arises when a prisoner needs to attend the funeral of a close relative or is taken seriously ill. But as far as I’m aware, none of these situations apply to her.”

BNP Chairperson Khaleda has been in prison since February, 2018. She is sentenced to serve 17 years in jail in two graft cases. BNP leaders allege the ruling Awami League has imprisoned her as an act of ‘political vengeance’.

She is currently receiving treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, or BSMMUH. She was transferred to the BSMMUH from the old central jail in Old Dhaka on Apr 1.

The 73-year-old politician is suffering from a combination of arthritis, high levels of diabetes and other age-related health complications.
