Moyeen, a BNP Standing Committee member, blamed the ruling Awami League for the attack, which occurred in the district’s Panchdona Bazar area around 12:30pm on Sunday.

However, local Awami League leaders were not available to respond to the allegations against them but some of the party’s activists were recognised chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogans and carrying rods.

Some BNP leaders and activists who were present at the scene with Moyeen were injured but Khan was unhurt. He was not immediately available for comment.

Moyeen Khan is running in the Dec 30 election as the paddy-sheaf candidate from the Narsingdi-2 constituency. Anwarul Ashraf Khan is the Awami League candidate for the seat.

Bahauddin Bhuiyan, an aide to Moyeen, alleged that the supporters of Awami League carried out the attacks amid a peaceful campaign event.

Moyeen was talking with locals and distributing leaflets. Then the leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League carried out the attack. They also shot at the BNP men, he said.

At least 50 BNP supporters, including some locals, were injured in the attack, he claimed.

Moyeen fled the spot and took shelter at a local shop along with his supporters. Some unidentified youths attacked them again with makeshift rods and local weapons. He was finally forced to leave the area, according to the locals, who witnessed the incident.

Posters were damaged and cars were vandalised and had their windows broken, our correspondent reports.

The incident has been reported and police are investigating, said Abu Taher, chief of Madhabdi Police Station.
