Kicking off the election campaign after offering prayers at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal and Hazrat Shahparan in Sylhet on Wednesday, he urged the alliance activists to work to ensure fair polls despite the arrests.

“Our leaders and activists are getting arrested every day. It’s not a sign of fair polls. But we will be in the election until the end. We must work for fair polls,” he said.

He asked the activists to guard the polling stations on the election day, Dec 30, to stop irregularities.

Dr Hossain also called upon the people to raise their voices to ensure fair polls. “The country does not belong to the people anymore if fair polls are not held,” he remarked.

“Oikya Front must win to return the country’s ownership to the people,” he said.

BNP leaders Nazrul Islam Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab, and Krishak Sramik Janata League chief Abdul Kader Siddique, among others, accompanied him.

The election campaigns of the BNP and its allies had earlier begun with prayers led by party Chairperson Khaleda Zia at the shrines in the northeastern district, but this time she is behind bars for corruption.
