Five years ago, those parties boycotted the national election, alongside the BNP, demanding the polls under a ‘neutral’ government.
Although the demand still remains unmet, the leftist leaders say they are participating in the election as part of a movement for a free, fair and neutral election.
Their demand mirrors the BNP’s stance on the election now slated for Dec 30.
“There is a public perception that the Election Commission has set up a trap by announcing a unilateral election schedule,” said Shah Alam,
coordinator of the Left Alliance and general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh.
“We will also continue our street protests to dispel fears over the election and force the Election Commission and the government to behave responsibly,” Alam said at a news briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday.
