He made the call in a statement issued after CEC KM Nurul Huda announced Dec 23 as the voting day on Thursday evening.

The Bikalpadhara Bangladesh chief also demanded deferment of the deadline for nomination submission, scrutiny of nominations, and the deadline for the withdrawal of candidacy, which are respectively Nov 19, Nov 22 and Nov 29, by a week.

He said the time set for nomination submission appeared “very little” to the alliance.

The former Bangladesh president said he believed it would be difficult for the commission to receive, scrutinise and interview the candidates in this period.

He also demanded steps to ensure free access of the local and foreign observers to the election areas from a week before the polls.
