The five-strong panel of physicians will go to the jailhouse on Nazimuddin Road before noon, Jailor Mahbubul Islam at Dhaka Central Jail said on Friday.

“We have been informed in writing by the hospital that the medical board will come to Khaleda Zia at 11:30am. We are ready to assist doctors,” he told bdnews24.com.

On Thursday, the government formed a fresh board with doctors from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University or BSMMU to examine Khaleda's health in jail.

But the BNP later expressed its displeasure about the absence of Khaleda’s personal physicians on the board.

“We had proposed names of five personal doctors of our leader for inclusion in the medical board. But the names have not been added to the BSMMU medical board. It is nothing but a sign of animosity,” said BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a news briefing on Friday.

On Sep 9, a seven-strong BNP team, led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and demanded Khaleda be shifted to the United Hospital for ‘better’ treatment as soon as possible.

Rizvi claimed that the home minister had promised them that Khaleda’s personal physicians will be on the medical board.

The BNP chief has been serving a five-year sentence in jail in Old Dhaka since on Feb 8 when she was convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The government has set up a special court inside the jailhouse to end the hearing on the Zia Welfare Trust graft case as Khaleda has been unable to appear in court for several months due to her ‘illness’.

A medical board had been formed to oversee Khaleda’s health after she fell ill near the beginning of April. The board said medical tests indicated that the illness was not serious.

Khaleda was taken to BSMMU for X-ray and blood tests on Apr 7. The BNP says it does not trust the medical board’s diagnosis.

Its delegation previously met the home minister twice on Mar 27 and Apr 23 to discuss the medical treatment.
