AL’s mayor aspirant Jhantu loses own centre to JP's Mostafizar

Outgoing mayor and Awami League candidate Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has lost in the centre in his own area to Jatiya Party’s Mostafizar Rahman by 125 votes in the Rangpur City Corporation election.

Jhantu's 'boat' drew 398 votes in the polling centre at Salema Girl’s High School in ward 24 while Mostafizar’s 'plough' secured 519 votes, as per the results announced by Returning Officer Subhas Chandra Sarker on Thursday evening.

“Voting is on in a fair manner. I will win if situation remains like this till the end and I will accept whatever judgement the people give,” Jhantu had said earlier in the morning after casting ballot at his centre.

Polling officers are now counting the ballots. The voting ended at all 193 centres at 5pm.

Mostafizar is far ahead of his rivals as per results announced from 34 centres until 7:45pm.

He has pulled 25,963 votes while Jhantu has bagged 10,118 ballots.

The Jatiya Party challenger won a landslide in his centre which was set up in Alamnagar College Road Govt Primary School in ward 22. He got 1,575 votes against Jhantu's 254 votes at this centre.
