State-owned Sonali Bank Ltd has charged Tabith with defaulting on repayment of loan, says an official at the office of Dhaka’s divisional commissioner.
Shahidul Islam on Monday told reporters, “An appeal against the returning officer’s decision clearing the candidate’s nomination was filled on Saturday.”
The divisional commissioner, the Election Commission-appointed appeals authority, will hold the hearing on the matter on Tuesday evening, he added.
Tabith, who is involved with 17 business entities, had submitted the nomination papers following his father.
While the returning officer rejected Mintoo’s nomination, Tabith got clearance to contest the Apr 28 polls.
Mintoo had appealed against the rejection of his nomination. But Divisional Commissioner Zillar Rahman, who heard it on Saturday, did not overrule the EC decision.
The BNP chairperson’s adviser then moved the High Court, but his plea was scrapped.
However, Multimode Group Deputy CEO Tabith, who is not linked to any political party, will lose his nomination, too, if the loan default accusations against him are proved.
Tabith in his affidavit had said his annual income was Tk 12.5 million. He holds bonds and shares worth Tk 148.1 million and other assets valued at Tk 152.5 million.
No other BNP leaders are in the Dhaka North mayoral race. The party is yet to announce its formal support to any of the other contenders.
Media reports suggest Tabith may receive the BNP’s backing with his former FBCCI chief father out of contention.
The party’s ally Bikalpadhara Bangladesh leader Mahi B Chowdhury may also get the endorsement, the reports say.
The Awami League has already announced its support to businessman Annisul Huq to run for mayor in Dhaka North.
The ruling party’s former MP Sarah Begum Kabori is also contending in the North.
