On May 5 last year, during Hifazat-e Islam's rally in Dhaka's Motijheel, several books shops at Paltan and Gulistan area were set to fire. Some 600 copies of the Quran were burnt during the mayhem.

At a press conference the next day, MK Anwar blamed the arson on Awami League (AL) activists, while denying Hifazat involvement.

The BNP leader had alleged that the arson had been led by AL's front organisation Swecchashebok League leader 'Debashish'.

Paltan Police Station's sub-inspector Abdur Rashid filed a general diary (GD) over Anwar's statement, accusing him of inciting communal tension.

The former MP, who was in court during Monday’s hearing, secured bail in the case.
