BNP National Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has warned that the sovereignty of Bangladesh’s parliament cannot be “interfered with” through law or order imposed on it.
He said, "We believe that, in order to ensure that the sovereignty of the national parliament of Bangladesh is not undermined, we do not want to allow any interference in the sovereignty of the national parliament by any law, order, or any kind of coercive proposal imposed on it."
"Because this is the only sovereign house in Bangladesh, which represents the people, their sovereign representation through those who will be elected to the national parliament."
Salahuddin made the remarks at an event in Dhaka's Shahbagh on Friday morning.
He said, "The only house in Bangladesh is the sovereign house of the national parliament of Bangladesh. You cannot challenge every discussion and deliberation of the house in court.
“We reiterate that there can be no proposal that dictates the sovereignty of that national parliament.”
The rally titled “Growing Violence and Disrespect against Women: A Conscious Society Ready to Resist” was organised by the Women and Children Forum in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh.
After the rally, women tied black cloths on their faces and led a silent procession from in front of the museum, which ended at the Central Shaheed Minar.
‘CONSTITUTION WILL NOT BE AMENDED THROUGH A REFERENDUM’
Salahuddin said that the BNP welcomed the proposal to obtain the consent of the people on the same day as the general election through a referendum.
“Because it is cost-effective, it is time-saving, it is efficient in various ways and it is convenient because more voters will be able to express their opinions through their participation.
He said, “Laws will not be made through a referendum, the Constitution will not be amended through a referendum.
"For that, a national parliament must be formed. We want the national parliamentary elections to be held in the first half of February. We want to exercise our right to vote. All the people of this nation are looking forward to exercising that right to vote freely and festively."
