Former law minister and veteran jurist Shafique Ahmed was laid to rest at the Azimpur graveyard in the evening, following two funeral prayers in Dhaka.
Earlier in the day, his body was brought to the Supreme Court premises, his long-time workplace, where colleagues and admirers paid their final respects.
A funeral prayer was held at the apex court’s Inner Garden at 2pm.
The prayer was attended by Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, current and former judges and a large number of lawyers.
Before the prayer, Asaduzzaman spoke on the life and legacy of the veteran lawyer.
Other speakers included Appellate Division Justice SM Emdadul Hoque, Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, and the late minister’s son Mahbub Shafique.
The first funeral prayer was held at 11am at the Indira Road playground near his residence.
Following the morning service, the coffin was moved to the top court for the legal fraternity to bid farewell.
Barrister Shafique passed away on Sunday afternoon at the age of 89 while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Medical College Hospital.
He had been admitted to the hospital on Saturday in critical condition.
A prominent figure in Bangladesh's legal and political landscape, Shafique served as the minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs from 2009 to 2014 under the Awami League government.
Beyond his ministerial role, he was a former president of the SCBA and had previously served as the vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council.
