Use of paper bags on the rise

The environment ministry has imposed a ban on the use of any type of polythene or polypropylene bags in different retail outlets including supershops from Oct 1. This ban has led to a surge in demand for paper bags. With the increasing demand, workers are spending busy hours in factories in Dhaka manufacturing paper bags and packets.

Different sizes of paper packets are neatly arranged at a wholesale shop named Ali Envelopes on Hasan Ali Lane in Dhaka’s Babubazar. Prices range from Tk 150 to Tk 1,600 per kg based on the paper and size. Photo: Abdullah al Momin
