In 2002, Bangladesh became the first country in the world to ban plastic and polythene bags. Despite the blanket prohibition, the use of polythene bags for packaging goods after sale is widespread, not just in Dhaka but in shops nationwide. Alternatives like cloth or paper bags are seldom used, as polythene remains a cheaper option for delivering goods to customers. Campaigns highlighting the detrimental effects of polythene on the environment have done little to deter its use.
