Bangladesh has recorded two deaths and 693 hospitalisations with dengue fever over the past 24 hours, taking this year’s death toll to 65.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its Thursday bulletin that the new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in 24 hours until 8am Thursday.
Eleven deaths from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease have occurred so far in August, according to the DGHS.
Among the new patients, 100 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 109 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Another 92 were admitted to hospitals elsewhere in the capital.
Outside Dhaka, 80 patients were admitted in Barishal Division, 95 in Chattogram, 103 in Khulna, 43 in Mymensingh, 51 in Rajshahi, 15 in Rangpur, and five in Sylhet.
Another 669 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals over the past 24 hours.
Since Jan 1, a total of 22,243 people have been hospitalised with dengue, with 20,563 recovered and discharged from hospitals.
The DGHS has been maintaining records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.
In 2023, the country recorded its highest-ever dengue toll, with 1,705 deaths among 321,179 hospitalised patients.
Last year, more than 400 people died of dengue, while around 102,000 cases were recorded.
