The health directorate has reported another death due to dengue fever in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities from the disease to 203 this year.
The latest victim, a 20-year-old woman, died at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported on Saturday.
Also, 374 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country in the past 24 hours.
This brings the total number of dengue-related hospitalisations this year to 48,865.
According to government data, September saw the highest number of dengue-related hospitalisations, with 15,866 admissions and 76 deaths.
In the first four days of October alone, 1,523 people have been hospitalised, and five have died from the disease. Previously, in July, 10,684 people were admitted, with 41 fatalities. Other months also saw varying numbers of hospitalisations and deaths:
January: 1,161 cases, 10 deaths
February: 374 cases, 3 deaths
March: 336 cases, no deaths
April: 701 cases, 7 deaths
May: 1,773 cases, 3 deaths
June: 5,951 cases, 19 deaths
August: 10,496 cases, 39 deaths
According to the latest health directorate bulletin, of the 374 new patients, 102 are from Chattogram Division, with additional hospitalisations reported in Dhaka’s two city corporations (94), Dhaka (67), Mymensingh (37), Chattogram (96), Rajshahi (11), and Barishal (63) divisions.
As many as 2,304 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals, with 787 in hospitals across Dhaka and 1,517 outside the capital.
Since 2000, the DGHS has been tracking dengue cases, with the highest number of hospitalisations occurring in 2023 -- 321,179 patients, with 1,705 deaths.
