An animated movie about a K-pop girl group fighting demons has become a global blockbuster, dominating Netflix and music charts alike.
Since its Jun 20 release, KPop Demon Hunters has racked up 158 million views, making it Netflix’s most-watched animated movie ever, BBC reports.
The story follows Huntr/x, an all-female K-pop group made up of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who lead double lives as secret guardians of the world.
Beyond the glamour of the stage, these global superstars protect their fans from supernatural threats, squaring off against their demonic counterparts, the Saja Boys.
These two fictional bands have also taken the music world by storm, even surpassing real K-pop powerhouses like BTS and Blackpink.
Seven tracks from the film’s soundtrack have stormed the Billboard Hot 100, with their songs rising to the top two spots on Spotify’s US chart.
The standout hit Golden, co-written and performed by star Ejae, has claimed the number one spot on the UK Singles Chart.
The movie’s universal themes of friendship and self-discovery have broadened its appeal beyond K-pop fans.
