The digital lottery for admission to grades 1 to 9 in government and private schools across metropolitan areas and district and Upazila towns is set to take place on Thursday.
With more than 150,000 applicants waiting for their fate, the draw will begin at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha at 10am.
“All preparations for organising the lottery ceremony are complete. The ceremony will begin at 10am, and the lottery will be held digitally,” Prof Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, a member of the Dhaka Metropolitan Admissions Committee and director of the Secondary Branch at the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, told bdnews24.com on Wednesday afternoon.
“If a student is selected while the lottery is ongoing, an SMS will be sent automatically to the phone number used during the application. Students will continue receiving results from the start of the process.”
State-owned mobile operator Teletalk is overseeing the digital system, as in previous years.
HOW TO CHECK RESULTS
Sohel said Teletalk will send the results directly to the phone number used in the application. Results will also be available on the website (https://gsa.teletalk.com.bd), where institution heads, guardians and students can log in with their ID and password to download them.
“The head of the institution will receive the full set of results, so students can also check with their schools,” he said.
In recent years, the digital lottery has typically taken several hours to complete.
ADMISSIONS START ON DEC 17
Students selected in the lottery will be able to complete admission formalities from Dec 17 to 21. This year, there will again be two waiting lists.
Admission from the first waiting list will run from Dec 22 to 24, and from the second list from Dec 27 to 30.
SIX APPLICANTS PER SEAT IN GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS
As in previous years, government schools have drawn significantly more interest.
According to Sohel, 719,858 students have applied for 121,596 seats in 689 government schools (around six applicants per seat). They have submitted preferences for a total of 1,041,138 seats.
In private schools, 336,196 students have applied for 1,072,917 seats across 3,360 institutions, submitting preferences for 593,616 seats (amounting to 31 percent of available seats).
APPLICATION PROCESS
Online applications opened on Nov 21 at 11am and continued until Dec 5 at 5pm through https://gsa.teletalk.com.bd.
Each application required a Tk 100 fee and allowed students to list five preferred schools. Applications for government and private schools had to be submitted separately.
The lottery-based admission system was introduced by the Awami League government during the pandemic in 2020 to reduce pressure on students and curb the coaching culture. It has been used every year since.
