Uttara University has signed 22 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with leading universities across Asia and Africa to boost its internationalisation efforts.
The agreements were finalised during the 5th Annual Global Sustainable Development Congress (GSDC) 2026, organised by Times Higher Education and held from Jun 22-25 at the Indonesia Convention Centre in Jakarta, according to a media statement from the institution.
The global summit gathered university leaders, policymakers, and researchers to discuss how higher education can accelerate sustainable development.
Abid Aziz, member of the Board of Trustees, and Sheikh Yasha Shan, director of the Office of the Institutional Ranking Cell, represented Uttara University at the four-day event, establishing partnerships through a series of high-level meetings and strategic networking sessions.
The majority of the alliances were forged in Indonesia, where the university partnered with 15 institutions.
According to the university, these include elite public research hubs such as Universitas Brawijaya and historical foundations like Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta.
The collaborations span multiple academic fields, covering space research and pharmacy at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ahmad Dahlan; advanced engineering, medicine, and law at Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, and Universitas Islam Ahmad Dahlan; as well as digital innovation at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia Muhammadiyah (UNIMUDA) Sorong.
Alliances were also formed with Universitas Negeri Padang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo, Universitas Muhammadiyah Magelang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Buton, Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau, Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Palangkaraya.
In the Philippines, the university secured ties with six premier institutions to enhance collaboration in agriculture, marine technology, and multidisciplinary research.
The cohort includes the University of the Visayas, the University of Eastern Philippines, Cavite State University, Southern Leyte State University, and Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College.
Expanding its reach to Africa, Uttara University also partnered with South Africa’s Durban University of Technology, a move aimed at facilitating technological exchange and joint entrepreneurial ventures.
The university said that these agreements will pave the way for student and faculty exchange programmes, joint research projects, co-authored publications, curriculum development, visiting scholar initiatives, dual-degree pathways, and co-organised international conferences.
"This achievement reflects Uttara University's growing commitment to global engagement and academic excellence," university representatives said.
"In today's interconnected world, international collaboration is no longer an option; it is a necessity. These partnerships will create meaningful opportunities for our students, faculty, and researchers while strengthening our contribution to global knowledge and sustainable development."
