Police have arrested three suspects over the murder of a BNP leader in Dhaka’s Adabor reportedly following a dispute over watching a football World Cup match and celebrating the victory.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Division’s Deputy Commissioner Md Ibne Mizan said the three were arrested in the Nobodoy Housing residential area around 4:30pm on Thursday.
The arrestees are Shoaib, Arman and Nayan, all identified by a single name.
Police are conducting raids to arrest the fugitives.
The victim Abul Bashar Badshah was the general secretary of the local BNP unit.
Police said the trouble had ensued in the early hours of Tuesday night right after Brazil's World Cup victory against Japan and the immediate celebrations.
When a group of local teenagers played drums and blew whistles, an argument broke out between a man named Habib and another individual named Nirob, both identified by a single name. It is alleged that Habib assaulted Nirob at that time.
The following day, acting on the same dispute, Saddam reportedly went to Nobodoy Bazar and assaulted Nirob again.
Local BNP leaders subsequently intervened to resolve the matter through arbitration.
Continuing these efforts, a meeting convened at Habib's office in Nobodoy Bazar on Wednesday.
However, at the conclusion of the arbitration, clashes erupted between Saddam and his supporters on one side, and associates of Nirob and his elder brother Ripon on the other.
Amidst the ensuing clashes between the two factions, Saddam and Badshah were hacked and severely injured.
The two injured were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital but were later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Badshah was declared dead around 11:30pm.
Tejgaon Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Jewel Rana said Saddam had filed a written complaint with Adabor Police before the attack.
Police confirmed that Habib is involved in local BNP politics, while Ripon and Nirob are known followers of Miraj, the senior vice-president of the local BNP unit.
