The cabinet of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government has approved a Tk 9.38 trillion budget for the new financial year.

The finance minister is set to place it before parliament later on Thursday.

The 2026-27 budget was approved at a cabinet meeting that began at 10am at the parliament building, presided over by the premier.

After the session wrapped up around 1pm, Tarique’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman confirmed that the cabinet greenlighted the budget proposals.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury will present the budget in parliament at 3pm, after President Mohammed Shahabuddin signs off on the bill

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which swept to power in the February election, is set to present a national budget after a gap of 20 years.

The budget sets a revenue income target of Tk 6.95 trillion, with a revenue collection target of Tk 6.04 trillion.

In a Bangladesh reshaped by the July Uprising, an elected government is placing the budget before parliament for the first time in the new political reality.

The 2026-27 budget proposal is due to be passed on Jun 30, with the new financial year beginning Jul 1.
