Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal is “doing very well” in his recovery from a heart attack following a stent procedure, doctors have said.
On Thursday, Dr Arif Mahmud of Evercare Hospital said he would be able to return home after another 48 hours of observation if things went according to plan.
Dr Shahabuddin Talukder, a senior consultant of the hospital’s Cardiology Care Center, spoke about Tamim’s current physical and mental state.
The hospital formed a five-member board led by Shahbuddin to assess Tamim’s physical condition.
“According to a board meeting report, Tamim is doing very well. He’s eating properly, and speaking to everyone. He’ll return to his [cabin] from CCU [cardiac care unit] today. He will then be observed for a day or two. Then he’ll be able to return home,” Shahabuddin said.
Tamim underwent an echocardiogram and other small tests as part of his regular assessment on Thursday. Shahbuddin said all tests returned good reports.
“We ran an echocardiogram test some time ago. The heart’s movement has eased by a bit. He’ll be able to lead a good life the way other things are now,” he said.
“About whether he’ll return to cricket, the cardiac and physiology teams would be able to tell after three-four months after observing Tamim’s condition.”
Shahabuddin said 36-year-old Tamim had difficulty accepting such a massive heart attack at such a young age.
“He’s not being able to accept it psychologically. He never imagined this would happen. But this has a lot of history. Many players have died on the field of play, or lost consciousness.”
On that note, Tamim is undergoing counselling under a psychiatrist along with other treatments.
“We’ve involved a counsellor for his mental health. [The counsellor] will listen to his questions and his fears to ensure that he copes with the situation. Then the counsellor will provide directions accordingly.”
“How’s he supposed to accept having a heart attack at this age… It’s very difficult. But he has to cope… he’ll gradually recover.”
Tamim, the captain of Mohammedan Sporting Club, complained of sharp pains in his chest before the team took to the field in a match against Shinepukur Cricket Club at Savar’s BKSP No. 3 field on Mar 24.
He was then rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered a block in his heart and decided to fit a stent to restore blood flow.
