Gas pressure to fall in Titas areas as one floating terminal remains shut

Gazaria, Meghna Ghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj and southern Dhaka are among the areas likely to face low pressure

Gas supply has fallen by around 400 million cubic feet per day after one floating terminal supplying regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) shut down due to technical problems, according to Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution.

In an emergency notice on Tuesday, the company said gas pressure would drop across its network, including in Gazaria, Meghna Ghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj and the southern part of Dhaka.

“Gas supply has decreased by about 400 MMCFD due to the shutdown of one FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) for RLNG supply for technical reasons,” Titas said in the notice.

“As a result, low gas pressure will prevail in Gazaria, Meghna Ghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj and southern Dhaka, as well as across other areas under Titas Gas coverage.”

The company apologised to customers for the temporary inconvenience.

It did not say why the terminal was shut, how long the disruption might last, or when supply would return to normal.

RLNG is produced by regasifying imported LNG. FSRUs are floating terminals at sea where LNG is stored, converted into gas and then sent to the national grid through pipelines.

Bangladesh began importing LNG through its first floating terminal in Moheshkhali in 2018. The terminal has a regasification capacity of 500 million standard cubic feet per day. A second terminal with the same capacity was commissioned later.
